Thank you for hanging out with me! From day to day you never know what life will throw at you. And it will often be this way in my blog as well :) But lest RUN WILD and LIVE FREE in this amazing adventure together!
The last few days I have received several requests from other friends on raising awareness for breast cancer. While this is very much a justifiable thing to want to raise awareness to I feel that so much awareness is put on things like breast cancer for women and prostate cancer for men that there are so many other health issues that go by the way side. So here is my soap box moment.
Cancer in general, in all forms, need more awareness. The major large sports stars from baseball to football and beyond wear “pink” to bring awareness to breast cancer. But what about all the other cancers? Are they lesser of importance?
What about Autoimmune diseases? Autoimmune disease is hardly ever talked about. But there is no cure. There is no treatment that will ever make there be a hope of this going away in the patients that suffer from it. Did you know that women are 3 times more likely to have an autoimmune disease vs. a man and that autoimmune disease is the fourth largest cause of disability in women and is in the top 10 reasons of death in women under the age of 65.
Do you realize that the #1 cause of death in women is heart disease, throughout all ethnic groups as well? Why are we not raising more awareness to this?
This is NOT to say that breast cancer is not an evil thing to have to battle, or the fight that women have had to go through to battle and beat breast cancer is not important or serious. This is my way of trying to raise awareness of other issues as well. All women fighting cancer, winning against cancer, those who have lost battles with cancer, and those living daily with autoimmune disease are amazing and strong! Why can’t we put more focus on our overall health and supporting each other through all cancers? It just saddens me that so many other health issues are forgotten due to how public breast cancer awareness is.
Maybe we can start brining awareness to other diseases and cancers by being more aware of them. And I think that some of that can be done by realizing the other cancers that are part of awareness months as well:
And March has been known as Autoimmune Disease Awareness month. Here is some general information in regard to Autoimmune Disease as well:
Let’s work together to raise more awareness about our health and help support each other in our different journeys.
